Hubbell fifth graders have been working on finishing up their IB unit, How the World Works. We had some pretty active volcanoes. Now we are working on PowerPoints about a scientific leader and how his/her discoveries have impacted the world.
In fifth grade math, we are finishing up on multidigit multiplication and division. Keep working on those math facts...homework won't take quite so long. We will be testing on this Friday.

In sixth grade math, they have finished their first unit and have moved on to fractions and decimals. Do you remember the factor trees we did last year? These are coming in handy. The students have been modeling their math thinking during class.

Band lessons continue this week. Chorus is meeting on Tuesdays from 3:00-3:45 and Writing Club meets on Thursdays from 3:00-4:00.

Conferences are coming up...notes will be sent home to remind you of the times and dates you signed up for at Open House.

It's finally here!!! The blog you have been waiting for...and then there was 5th grade!!!

Our fifth graders have been very busy already in this first full month of the school year. They have become scientists and are learning about variables and their effects in the scientific process while exploring their IB unit of How the World Works. They created swingers and lifeboats looking at controlled experiments. This week they are mixologists and experimenting with corn starch, baking soda, citric acid and vinegar. It could get quite explosive around here!!

They are also learning about variables in math and the need for them in algebraic equations. Many 5th graders have forgotten all the different methods we have used for multi-digit multiplication and division, so we are reviewing that this month also.

We are reading different types of books and materials. Our main foci have been comparing and contrasting, and using details for inferencing.

On the musical side of things, band lessons started this week as did chorus.

Writing Club continues to meet on Thursdays from 3:00-4:00 in Room 313.
